First comes the trim, then the paint, then…

There’s a definite order to building a Parade house (or any house, for that matter.) This week’s visit to the Parade site found most of the builders in the middle of trim work. After oodles of wood is delivered to the home, the trim carpenters swoop in with their saws, caulking and nail guns to get down to business.

Trim carpenters are highly-detailed craftsmen and their work, which sometimes plays a subtle role and other times is the headliner, takes skill and experience. Some of the more basic work is trimming out the baseboards and doorways. Where you’ll really see their expertise is in the crown molding, around the fireplaces, in the detailed paneling of the formal dining rooms and studies, and in the built-in features.

When you visit the Parade later this summer, take special note of the trim work. And consider the hours of manpower and skill that went into the final product. For now, here’s a sneak peek!

Outdoor living taking shape at Parade site

A recent trip to the BIA Parade site found the crew at Kevin Knight’s Parade house busy adding brick detailing to the outdoor fireplace and grilling space. The area will flow from the large “gathering room” that’s part of a great open floor plan. A sliding door will disappear into the wall creating a seamless connection between the inside and outside space.

Just imagine yourself enjoying a glass of wine while your dinner cooks on the customized grill…

A day of sunshine, trim and bricks.

We (the parade bloggers) are back on the job and caught up today with the progress at the site.   We took a sneak peek inside Bob Webb’s house to find two trim carpenters working away.

And outside, we found some brick being laid at Webb’s…and also caught Weaver Custom Homes House getting its facade.  As Kermit would say, moving right along…toward July 24!

Many hands make light work… and a good Parade.

A working group has been developed for purposes of planning different aspects of the 2010 BIA Parade. The group consists of representatives from the BIA, various members of the New Albany community, as well as representatives from the site developer, The New Albany Company.

The group will meet regularly over the next several months to brainstorm ideas and plan the many exciting elements that will make this year’s Parade of Homes truly spectacular.

Knight, Duffy and Gossing Take Top 2009 Parade Awards

Leading the pack with 12 awards, Kevin Knight was the standout in the crowd at the annual awards ceremony that took place tonight at the 2009 BIA Parade of Homes preview party at Tartan Ridge in Dublin.   Knight’s generational farm house with reclaimed wood floors, a live roof garden, an 18 foot retractable wall into a central courtyard garden, unique floor plan and overall design set the entry apart.

Duffy Homes by Michael Edwards with its French country chateau adorned with original antiques from Provence, dramatic interior stone wall, elegant first floor master suite and functional floor plan came in with eight awards.

Gossing Construction, which won best exterior architecture for its unique craftsman-style approach, also won five more awards highlighting it’s stunning entryway, greatroom and inviting arts & crafts interiors.

Below you will find a complete list of all award winners and accompanying photos for each category.  We encourage you to make sure to visit the Parade to see these building, design and landscape awardees in person.

Many thanks to the nine judges (listed with the awards) who took a whole day out of their busy schedules to help with the judging on Wednesday.  Touring eleven homes with a critical eye was a big job and we appreciate their service to the BIA!

Builder Countdown with M/I Homes

We suspect Teresa Lynn Collins from M/I Homes has a pretty nice closet at home, but we doubt she has three like they have built in this year’s Parade home.  Meaning three really big ones right in the master suite.   In this video, she talks about this favorite idea (And for those of us who have gotten a sneak preview of the woman’s closet all finished, we’re pretty sure the vaulted ceiling puts it in contention for the gold in the fanciest closet olympics!).
