Sometimes, the most delightful ideas can come unexpectedly. Compass Homes, builder of the BIA Foundation House, found a late solution to finishing their garage floor which made everyone say “I want one of those!” Easy to clean, good enough for entertaining, durable and not terribly expensive. Compass is known for those little ideas that make living easier, but this may just be a big one! Come see it for yourself at the Parade.

This year’s parade builders are giving BUILT-IN some new meaning. From the ‘family management center’ to the key garage and reading/hiding nook to the elaborate closets, wine cellars, kitchen pantries, recessed wall for family photos, traditional book shelves and window seats, this year’s parade has kept the woodworkers hopping. Oh, and not to mention, gives professional organizers some new dreams.

We know that the five-year old and under crowd love a good bath. But we are curious about the other 80% of your household residents. Does anyone really use these tubs? The homebuilders seem to think it is up for debate, despite finding one in every master suite.

Here are some from Coppertree, Duffy/Michael Edwards, M/I Homes, Stafford and Compass. We didn’t get a photo of the only iron tub we saw at Romanelli & Hughes’ home – but they seem to be the only one ambitious enough to lug it upstairs to their master.

Focus turns to interiors

At all the parade homes, exteriors are getting final touches while the focus is about to turn inside. The Electrical Walk-Through

When Chris and Cindy Nelson decided to purchase the 2009 Parade home being built by Compass Homes (which also happens to be the Foundation House, but more on that later), they entered the game early enough to make a lot of decisions. Anybody who’s gone through the process of building a custom home realizes what all these decisions are – there are a lot of them. A small sampling: lighting, plumbing fixtures, exterior trim colors and materials, wall colors, carpet colors, appliance colors… the list goes on.

A recent visit found the Nelsons doing the electrical walk-through with the folks from Compass Homes. The 3 or 4 hour task has been trimmed down to a 5-minute glimpse of all the minute decisions that are made before any wires are run or drywall is put in place.

It’s a busy time for the Nelsons…

It’s dangerous up there

Roofing is underway at the Parade. On a recent visit to the site, there were several roofers braving the cold conditions, not to mention the steep pitches of the rooflines. this builder was getting started at Duffy Homes.

Although the arrival of rooftops may evoke a yawn from many, it’s actually a crucial milestone for the home builder. Once the roof is on (and the walls, windows and doors are in place), the house is protected from the elements and serious work can begin on the inside.

So now that the lid is on, what’s next? Stay tuned for more updates on the progress.
